Confidence Booster From Anna

Confidence Booster

Blame generation now, blame generation online media. Here's proof that when it comes to fashion events, people are most likely going to watch, stare, gossip, eavesdrop, photograph AND twitpic whatever move you make. One of my twitter followers cheekily took a paparazzi-style photo of me chatting to Anna Wintour using his phone, at the Alexander Wang show in New York last month.

photo of Bryanboy talking to Anna Wintour at Alexander Wang fall/winter 2011 fashion show in New York

Let me share to you what I went through when that photo was taken. Earlier that day, Anna commended me for my use of these neon green hair scrunchies I got from Brazil as ankle bracelets to my Lanvin sneakers. I thought I'd ask her a question I've always wanted to ask.

Me: "Hi Anna! Out of curiosity, and Lady Gaga cover aside, when was the last time you did something for the first time?"

AW: *chortle* "Couldn't you have asked a simpler question?"

*uhhhhhh 1, 2, 3, 4, time is ticking away, let me think, let me think, I'm not gonna waste her ti--*

Me: May I take your photo instead?

AW: *smirk* "Sure."

Me: "Thank you"

After getting my shot, I slowly walked away to preserve whatever dignity (what dignity?) I have left. What else is there to do? Hang around for idle chatter and banter? I came to her to ask that one question, she answered, that was that. NEXT! Gotta move on, move forward and try to find another familiar face to talk to. Besides, I could feel and see from the corner of my eyes that they are talking about my question. It's that blogger! Oh no Bryan didn't! Burn! Send him to outer space!

I thought, oh geez, I blew it up big time!

Not more than ten feet and a few seconds later, one of the bodyguards called me (SIR! EXCUSE ME, SIR!) and I saw Anna stretch one arm and motioned me to come back to her.

I had this voice in my head chanting, uh oh, you’re gonna get it. You’re gonna get it really good. Be prepared for decapitation Bryan, this is it, this is the sacrificial lamb moment…

She smiled and said, "I went to China."

Me: "Thank you. I saw those photos online a few months back."

Instead of feeling defeated, I walked away with my chest out, beaming with joy and confidence this time around.

That was in New York.

By the time Paris came I'm all 'oh hay mamacita mother hen, how are you?' on her.

Just kidding. Not exactly like that but close enough. ;-)

Anna Wintour's Visit to China

Anna Wintour's Visit to China

It's not every day Mama Anna visits my part of the world. Vogue China's Angelica Cheung hosted Anna Wintour, the Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, in Shanghai and Beijing. Anna, who recently featured a story on the rise of Asian models in the latest issue of Vogue, spoke at a forum at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with Vogue lieutenants Mark Holgate and Sylvana Soto-Ward.

The Scene at Chanel Haute Couture Fall Winter 2010-2011

The Scene at Chanel Haute Couture Fall Winter 2010-2011

Ahhh Chanel. The crown jewel of haute couture collections. Chanel is Chanel; it's the grand-daddy of shows in Paris. I squealed with delight when the lovely folks at Chanel asked for my mailing address in Paris. I had no idea what they are about to send me. It could be anything, you know? Mailing list? Promotional material? A new fragrance? Lookbooks? Nope, they sent me my first haute couture show invitation. Although I've done the NY/Europe menswear and womenswear circuit for a few seasons, I'm still a couture virgin.

Until now.
(Well, until last week lol)

American Vogue November 1988 - Micaela Bercu

American Vogue November 1988

Speaking of number one, behold my latest acquisition: the November 1988 issue of American Vogue.

US Vogue November 1988 cover featuring Micaela Bercu

This is Anna Wintour's first issue as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue USA after replacing Grace Mirabella.

Micaela Bercu, in a Christian Lacroix haute couture jacket, was photographed by Peter Lindbergh who, as reported last month, is returning to the magazine after an eighteen-year hiatus. It's also the first time jeans appeared on the cover of the magazine.

I bought this (for $75 shipping included) on eBay after a crazy bidding war. I wasn't gonna let it go.

Trust me, every penny I've spent is worth this amazing piece of history.

A Marvelous and Magnificent, Very Vogue Day

A Marvelous and Magnificent, Very Vogue Day

Welcome to my new office.

Vogue Lobby, 12th floor of Conde Nast Building, 4 Times Square.

I kid, I kid you!!!

What a marvelous, magnificent and magical day. I went to Conde Nast yesterday afternoon.

Without going into detail, I had the absolute pleasure (and honor) of meeting Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington, Sally Singer, Tonne Goodman, Virginia Smith and Mark Holgate at the American Vogue offices. Yes, the inner sanctum where dreams are fulfilled and miracles happen.

Alas, what happened on the 12th floor stays at the 12th floor but let me assure you, the future looks bright!

After spending an hour and twenty minutes at Vogue, I invited a friend for a celebratory visit to Bergdorf Goodman for a quick, no-frills, very late lunch.

Bergdorf Goodman

During our toast, I had an epiphany.

If the United Nations had a "Dreams Come True" program, I'm probably the ultimate poster-child, no, UNICEF Ambassador, that dreams do indeed come true.

With all the amazing things that have happened to me over the past few months, especially with what I once thought was inaccessible to someone who came from a (very) faraway land and with modest means such as myself, it occurred to me right then and there that maybe, just maybe, it's now my obligation and duty to keep THE dream and the fantasy, whatever it may be, alive, so that I (like the team over at Vogue) get to inspire people of my generation and others, TO HAVE the same, if not bigger, dreams. Afterall, it's our dreams and ambitions and goals that help us all move forward to have better, more colourful and fashionably-inspired lives....

Am I making any sense here? I hope you know what I mean because I feel like I'm posting gibberish after being in cloud nine...

To my fairy godmother, again, thank you so much for the red carpet ride over the Vatican where I saw the pope, the apostles and of course, the inner sanctum!

And Emily? That's all!

Mwah mwah.

PS. Yes, I've been to the closet. It was heaven on earth. Balenciaga and Proenza shoes forever!

PPSS. No, I didn't take photos inside and I didn't dare ask whether I could take photos or not. I'd like to visit there again and some memories are best kept in the head and cherished with the heart!

A Note to Me From Anna Wintour, American Vogue

A Note to Me From Anna Wintour of American Vogue

Cloud Nine Moment!

As soon as I go back to the Philippines, you bet this signed note from Anna Wintour is going to go inside a six feet wide by eight feet tall glass and wood frame (ok, think floor-to-ceiling) and I'll post this on my bedroom wall.

Anna Wintour Notecard

Click HERE for the full scan.

I've always believed that the best things in life are small but grand gestures money can't buy.

All those bygone childhood years of me mutilating issues of American Vogue to decorate my bedroom with editorials and ads... and to dream about the imagery and the clothes behind them... have finally paid off!

Thank you so much Anna.

If y'all excuse me, I'm gonna go cry now.

Anna Wintour Flexes Her Muscle While Carine Roitfeld Plays Second Fiddle in Her Own Turf

Anna Wintour Flexes Her Muscle While Carine Roitfeld Plays Second Fiddle in Her Own Turf

On January 25, Anna Wintour, Carine Roitfeld and the French Industry Minister, Christian Estrosi, had a meeting to discuss the future of French fashion and what the French government can do to help the (struggling) fashion industry.

Oh how I laughed when I first saw these images. This is what happens if you put Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinsky and Hilary Clinton together. Look at their body language... and look how Carine graciously distanced herself from Anna and Christian.

Anna Wintour, Christian Estrosi, Carine Roitfeld in Paris

A brilliant display of power (Anna) and sportsmanship (Carine) right there!

Dramalamama, aye caramba Anna Carinnenana. Doesn't it look like a scene out of a movie? You know, a man, his wife and a mistress? I'll let you decide who's the apple and who's the orange but lady number one looks immaculate in her well-fitted suit, her luxurious chinchilla fur collar and of course, her impeccable coiffure -- not a hair out of sight. Meanwhile, lady number two is one sexy, hot cougarlicious mess: striking zebra coat, ferocious trademark raccoon eyes and matching brothel hair.

Upon further thought (yes, I know it doesn't happen very often but unfortunately for me and you, I *do* like to exercise my brain from time to time to burn calories), I realized these photos represent a very bittersweet state of affairs. I could only imagine how intense, and to a certain extent, how embarrassing, it must have been to Carine that Mama Wintour is taking proactive measures -- in her own turf.

Watch The September Issue Online

For those of you unlucky ones who haven't seen RJ Cutler's smashing "The September Issue" documentary, boy, consider it your lucky day. Watch the full-length video below.

[Update - 11/03/2009: Due to a copyright claim by Actual Reality Pictures, producers of The September Issue, I am removing the Youku.com (where it's hosted) video player on my site. You may, instead, buy the September Issue DVD HERE.]

Anna Wintour, September Issue

It's an hour and twenty something minutes long so grab some popcorn and a drink. Or a bag of raisins and some mineral water.

As always, I have one thing to say. You're welcome.
